Trainers have heard all the excuses. The single most common one we hear is “I’m too busy to work out.” Let’s just check that excuse at the door and stop defending a sedentary lifestyle. Here are four ways to ensure you’re never too busy to get a workout in:

  1. Make it a family affair: A lot of people use their own families as an excuse for not having the time or energy to work out. They don’t have to be separate! Combine the two by encouraging active family outings. Instead of watching TV or movies together, go biking, hiking, visit the beach, set up some hop scotch, play basketball, or throw a frisbee. The possibilities are really endless! If you have small children or the weather is a problem, engage in active play in the house. Have a dance party, play ball, run, jump, lift your kids, do light calisthenics together. There are also plenty of active games like Simon Says, Red Light/Green Light, Red Rover, or Duck Duck Goose. This family time will help both you and your children grow stronger and healthier.
  2. Lunch workout: We’re not advising you skip lunch, but how long does it really take to eat? It shouldn’t take  longer than 10-15 minutes and if you’re like most people, you have 60 minutes for lunch. Bring your lunch to work to minimize wasted time and go for a quick jog or walk before you eat. In an ideal situation there’s a gym at or near your office but even if there’s not you can always take a brisk 30 minute walk in the neighborhood. Having a hard time justifying a workout break because of the lost work time? Just remember that a workout during the day will actually improve both your productivity and focus for the remainder of your day! Pack your lunch, get out of the office, get your blood flowing, and get excited for a more productive and healthy lifestyle.
  3. Commercial bootcamp: Like most of us you probably have at least one or two TV shows that you just have to see. Well guess what? You don’t need to give up watching your favorite TV shows! We’re not giving you the green light to veg out though: Take advantage of the commercials! Do as many pushups, lunges, and crunches as you can during commercials. If you watch TV with your spouse or significant other, then do your exercises together. A little healthy competition never hurt anyone as long as you’re maintaining proper form. Think about it.   4. In home trainer: No time to get to the gym? A qualified trainer who will train you in your own home or building gym can make all the difference in the world. They can schedule sessions to fit your schedule so no more excuses! An in-home personal trainer will give you no choice but to be motivated and power through your workouts.
