Mindful eating will help you lose weight, look great, feel great, and have more energy. The next time you have a meal I want you to sit down in a quiet place, smell your food, look at it, assess the size of your meal, taste every bite, and think about how it makes you feel afterward. I want you to eat when your hungry and stop when you’re full. If you really think about it, this should be easy right? Why doesn’t everybody do it?
The fact is most of us lead very busy lives and we don’t even take the time to truly enjoy or even pay attention to what we’re putting in our bodies. Stop eating when you’re distracted. Think about it. If you’re in the movies, are you one of those people who is mindlessly shoving popcorn down their throats only to wash it down with a nice over sized soda. Maybe you’re a big sports fan and you’ll glue yourself to the TV while you eat pizza, wings, and drink beer. How about happy hour with your coworkers. You can have a few drinks and eat some wings while you blow off some steam.
To be perfectly honest I’ve done all of these things, but in the last few years I’ve practiced mindful eating and I look and feel better than I ever have. I’m not saying not to enjoy the foods you love that might not be oatmeal, veggies, and egg whites, I’m just saying do it mindfully and listen to your body. You might feel fine after one slice of pizza or a few fries once in a while, but think about how you feel after a big burger, fries, and a soda, a big tub of buttered popcorn, or maybe a pint of ice cream. I don’t know about you, but I feel like a bear who’s ready to hibernate.
In the beginning it will be difficult, but over time you’ll realize that healthier nutrient dense foods like greens, beans, fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean meats, actually make your body feel better. You’ll have more energy, feel lighter, stronger, and still satisfied. Not to mention you’ll look great.
